It all began, surprisingly, with a retired US Marine Major, Donald E. Keyhoe. He had written a book about Charles Lindbergh (Flying with Lindbergh) and had written articles for True Magazine relating to military matters. When flying saucers hit the spreadsheets in 1947 and aggravatingly would not go away he seemed a logical and credible choice to look into it.
At first, little serious interest was given to their existence, and even less interest was accorded the idea that they were from outer space. But the stories persisted. Then something phenomenal happened. Captain Thomas Mantell, a pilot in the KYANG (Kentucky Air National Guard) supposedly chased a huge flying saucer on January 7, 1948, near Godman Field and was destroyed in the pursuit.
The incident happened at absolutely the wrong time. The scare over flying saucers was at an absolute high. Only a week before this on December 30, 1947, Secretary of Defense James Forrestal had signed Project Sign into effect. Its actual name was not known by the public at that time, so it was popularly known as Project “Saucer.” The Air Force was now officially investigating flying saucers. The day after Mantell’s death the papers read “Saucer Attack.” Two weeks after Mantell’s death, Sign officially started its investigations. Below is an excerpt from the seventh chapter of The Hollow Earth, first published in 1969, by Dr. Raymond Bernard, which is said to be a pen name.

The conception of a hollow earth presented in this book offers the most reasonable theory of the origin of the flying saucers and is far more logical than the belief in their interplanetary origin. For this reason, leading flying saucer experts, as Ray Palmer, editor of “Flying Saucers” magazine, and Gray Barker, a well known writer on flying saucers, have accepted the theory of their subterranean origin as against the idea that they come from other planets.  

The theory that flying saucers came from the Earth’s interior and not from other planets originated in Brazil and only later was it taken up by American flying saucer experts.

 

In 1957, while browsing in a Sao Paulo, Brazil, book-store, the author came across a book that struck his attention, entitled, “From the Subterranean World to the Sky: Flying Saucers,” by O. C. Huguenin. It was the book’s thesis that flying saucers were not space ships from other planets but were of terrestrial origin and came from a subterranean race dwelling inside the earth. . . .Read Complete Report

Eyeballin’ The UFO Enclosure Part 2: Early Flying Saucer Reports

In 2006 I published a book about the flying ships of the 1800’s , The Secrets of Dellschau, the story of a turn of the 20th Century artist who, through his art work which consisted of 1000’s of drawings of strange airships, claimed he and a group of people formed a secret society called “The Sonora Aero Club” who were involved in developing flying machines using anti-gravity fuel in the mid-1800’s in secret near Sonora California during the Gold Rush. 

 During the writing of that book I researched the 1896-97 Airship Mystery and was so intrigued with the stories and the possibility of a connection between these reports and the Sonora group that I included information of those early airships in my book.

For those of us looking into the hollow planets theory this is a very exciting photo. Puts me in mind of another unexplained photo of the north pole of Earth. This is a composite of photos of Earth taken from the ESSA-7 satellite on November 23,1968.  It first appeared in Ray Palmer’s Flying Saucers magazine issue 69 for June 1970. The image has yet to be explained in a satisfactory manner. . . . Every so often, usually in the vast deserts of the American Southwest, a hiker or a backpacker will run across something puzzling: a large concrete arrow, as much as seventy feet in length, sitting in the middle of scrub-covered nowhere.

On August 20, 1920, the United States opened its first coast-to-coast airmail delivery route, just 60 years after the Pony Express closed up shop. There were no good aviation charts in those days, so pilots had to eyeball their way across the country using landmarks. This meant that flying in bad weather was difficult,
and night flying was just about impossible.
The Postal Service solved the problem with the world’s first ground-based
civilian navigation system: a series of lit beacons that would extend from
New York to San Francisco. Every ten miles, pilots would pass a bright yellow concrete arrow. Each arrow would be surmounted by a 51-foot steel tower
and lit by a million-candlepower rotating beacon.
(A generator shed at the tail of each arrow powered the beacon.)

Now mail could get from the Atlantic to the Pacific not in a matter of weeks,
but in just 30 hours or so. Even the dumbest of air mail pilots, it seems, could follow a series of bright yellow arrows straight out of a Tex Avery cartoon. By 1924, just a year after Congress funded it, the line of giant concrete markers stretched from Rock Springs, Wyoming to Cleveland, Ohio. The next summer, it reached all the way to New York, and by 1929 it spanned the continent uninterrupted, the envy of postal systems worldwide.

Radio and radar are, of course, infinitely less cool than a concrete
Yellow Brick Road from sea to shining sea, but I think we all know how
this story ends. New advances in communication and navigation technology made
the big arrows obsolete, and the Commerce Department decommissioned the beacons
in the 1940s. The steel towers were torn down and went to the war effort.
But the hundreds of arrows remain. Their yellow paint is gone,
their concrete cracks a little more with every winter frost,
and no one crosses their path much, except for coyotes and tumbleweeds.
But they’re still out there.

The next episode in our series is Australia’s UFO Files. The National Archives of Australia holds a number of records relating to UFOs, flying saucers and other unidentified aerial phenomena. The documents became available in August 2012 under Australia’s 30-year rule. This rule orders the release of government documents 30 years after they were created. Most of these records date from the 1950’s to the 70’s, when public interest in UFOs was high and many sightings were reported to Commonwealth authorities.

A new documentary is in the works about the discoveries of aerospace illustrator, Mark McCandlish. He says information has been shared with him about an Alien Reproduction Vehicle built by the military using technology that has been back engineered from alien technology.

The staff at the National Declassification Center in College Park, Md., knew they found something interesting when they cracked open a cardboard box and saw cutaway schematics of flying saucers printed on the pages. The pages describe an Air Force flying saucer program that started in the mid-1950’s and ended in 1961. In the upper right hand of each page was the icon of a flying disc stamped over a red arrow, the insignia of Project 1794.

Last week, the NDC staff released a summary report from the project, dated 1956, and the global media went into a frenzy. The documents related to a flying saucer program by a Canadian firm, Avro Aircraft, that the U.S. military funded. Back then, the Air Force wanted a supersonic fighter while the Army wanted a flying jeep. In the end, after $10 million, the saucer was nothing more than a glorified, 18-ft-diameter hovercraft that lost control and stability after it rose above its 5 foot cushion of air.
