The Next Seven States To Legalize Pot
December 18, 2012 9:00 AM ET

The Berlin Wall of pot prohibition seems to be crumbling before our eyes.

By fully legalizing marijuana through direct democracy, Colorado and Washington have fundamentally changed the national conversation about cannabis. As many as 58 percent of Americans now believe marijuana should be legal. And our political establishment is catching on. Former president Jimmy Carter came out this month and endorsed taxed-and-regulated weed. “I’m in favor of it,” Carter said. “I think it’s OK.” In a December 5th letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) suggested it might be possible “to amend the Federal Controlled Substances Act to allow possession of up to one ounce of marijuana, at least in jurisdictions where it is legal under state law.” . . . Weed Dispenser Combination of Public Domain photosWill cigarette makers jump into pot market?

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS Associated Press Published: Dec 19, 2012 at 10:58 AM PST Last Updated: Dec 19, 2012 at 11:27 AM PST

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – Will the Marlboro Man light up a joint soon?

The states of Washington and Colorado legalized possession of small amounts of marijuana in the November elections, but it is unclear if any cigarette makers plan to supply either market.

Marijuana remains illegal under federal law. President Barack Obama indicated last week that going after individual users won’t be a priority, but there’s no firm indication yet what action the Justice Department might take against states or businesses that participate in the nascent pot market, which has the potential to be large. For example analysts have estimated that a legal pot market could bring Washington state hundreds of millions of dollars a year in new tax revenue for schools, health care and basic government functions.

Bill Phelps, a spokesman for Philip Morris USA, maker of Marlboro, based in Richmond, Va., was vague when asked about the future intentions of the nation’s largest tobacco company. . . . Read Complete Report

Legal pot complicates drug-free work policies

DENVER — Pot may be legal, but workers may want to check with their boss first before they grab the pipe or joint during off hours.

Businesses in Washington state, where the drug is legal, and Colorado, where it will be by January, are trying to figure out how to deal with employees who use it on their own time and then fail a drug test. . . . Read Complete Report

Strategy, Timing Key To States’ Pot Legalization

legalize-marijuana-leaf-red-white-blue-flagIn the late-1980s heyday of the anti-drug “Just Say No” campaign, a man calling himself “Jerry” appeared on a Seattle talk radio show to criticize U.S. marijuana laws.

An esteemed businessman, he hid his identity because he didn’t want to offend customers who — like so many in those days — viewed marijuana as a villain in the ever-raging “war on drugs.”

Now, a quarter century later, “Jerry” is one of the main forces behind Washington state’s successful initiative to legalize pot for adults over 21. And he no longer fears putting his name to the cause: He’s Rick Steves, the travel guru known for his popular guidebooks. . . .Read Complete Report

2 states legalize pot, but don’t ‘break out the Cheetos’ yet (+) R.I.P: Marijuana Prohibition (w/Video)

Finally!

Prohibition of alcohol was finally overturned, not by the FEDS making it legal, but by legalizing alcohol state by state, thereby ignoring the 18th Amendment.

First the State of New York legalized it while it was still illegal  under Federal law.  Then other states started to legalize until it reached the point that the FEDs didn’t have enough officers to enforce the law.  Then, and only then, did the FEDS join in by passing The 21st Amendment which repealed the 18th Amendment, the prohibition of alcohol. Amendment 21 repeals Amendment 18. This is the same plan being used for the legalization of marijuana.  Looks like we’re on the right track.  Smoke um if you got um!!!. . . EDITOR

2 states legalize pot, but don’t ‘break out the Cheetos’ yet
By Alan Duke, CNN
updated 12:17 PM EST, Wed November 7, 2012

Los Angeles (CNN) — Pro-pot groups cheered passage of referendums legalizing recreational marijuana in Colorado and Washington state as the “light at the end of the tunnel” in their 50-year campaign to make the drug legal nationwide.

“Yesterday’s elections have forever changed the playing field regarding cannabis prohibition laws in America (and probably in large parts of the world too),” Allen St. Pierre, executive director of NORML — the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws — wrote in a celebratory blog Wednesday.

But Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper warned it’s too soon to “break out the Cheetos” since his state must still navigate federal laws before citizens can legally buy and sell cannabis. . . . Read Complete Report

R.I.P: Marijuana Prohibition

November 7, 2012

The beginning of the end…has begun.

Yesterday’s elections have forever changed the playing field regarding cannabis prohibition laws in America (and probably in large parts of the world too)

The citizens of Colorado, Washington and Massachusetts delivered game changing victories last night for the nearly fifty year-old cannabis law reform Movement. Massachusetts becomes the eighteenth state to pass legal protections for qualified medical patients who’ve cannabis recommended to them by a physician. Colorado and Washington become the first places in the world, ever, where citizens have cast votes to reject cannabis prohibition, and replace the failed public policy with alternatives like tax-n-regulate models (similar to the control and taxation models widely accepted for alcohol and tobacco product use by adults). . . . Colorado and Washington Legalized Marijuana Tuesday, What Happens Now?

by Erik Altieri, NORML Communications Director

November 8, 2012

Tuesday night, the states of Colorado and Washington sent a loud and clear message to the federal government that they no longer wish to enforce the futile prohibition on cannabis. The symbolic impact of these victories are immediate, but what are the practical effects on the ground now that these two initiatives have been approved?

In Washington State, regulations for the marijuana retail outlets are going to start being drafted by the Washington State Liquor Control Board. This process is expected to last about a year. The immediate impact of passing I-502 is on the state laws regarding possession. Starting on December 6th, Section 20 of the initiative will take effect. This section effectively states that any person over the age of 21 is legally allowed to possess up to 1oz of dried marijuana, 16oz of marijuana solids (edibles), and 72oz of cannabis infused liquids (think oils and lotions). It is also no longer a crime to possess marijuana paraphernalia. . . . Read Complete Report

FDA Approves Synthetic THC for Pharma Co. Behind Anti-Pot Lobby and Opioid Bribery Scheme

FDA Approves Synthetic THC for Pharma Co. Behind Anti-Pot Lobby and Opioid Bribery Scheme

Source: The Free Thought Project

A Big Pharma company, Insys caught bribing doctors to prescribe opioids and lobbying against pot, just got their second synthetic THC approved by FDA.

The historic Nov. 2016 ballot initiatives to legalize cannabis brought a resounding win for freedom in several states, with the exception of Arizona. There, voters narrowly rejected decriminalization, in no small part due to a massive anti-pot propaganda campaign funded in-part by Big Pharma.

Arizona-based Insys Therapeutics gave $500,000 to a group called Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy, which amounted to 10 percent of the group’s total money used to manufacture and disseminate anti-pot propaganda. Some of the scare tactics Insys used itself was to claim that legalization “fails to protect the safety of Arizona’s citizens, and particularly its children,” and that production of “narcotic raw materials” promotes abuse.

Both of these claims are patently absurd coming from a pharma corporation under investigation for bribery and marketing fraud relating to its synthetic opioid Subsys — . . . Read Complete Report

Minnesota has legalized some forms of medical marijuana. But now there’s a move to legalize it for recreational use as well. Several DFL lawmakers are proposing a law to do that. They’re also proposing a state constitutional amendment to make pot legal. Speakers include Bill authors Rep. Jason Metsa (DFL – Virginia) and Rep. Tina Liebling (DFL – Rochester) .

The bill is opposed by at least one key Republican— the GOP controls the legislature — and Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton opposes it.

If the legislature passes the constitutional amendment, it will go directly to the voters with or without Dayton’s signature.

Applebaum says realizes the bill isn’t likely to pass this session, but says it is a conversation starter about something that eventually has to change.

“Uruguay is breaking the international conventions on drug control with the cannabis legislation approved by its congress,” said the INCB, citing several reasons why it thinks Uruguay has made a mistake, among them the purported health risks associated with the plant’s use, the drug body said on its website. . . .
