Nazca turn-ons include pottery, weaving, inventing different kinds of paint, irrigation and drawing humongous pictures of monkeys, lizards, llamas, people and dogs in the desert sands. Turn-offs include littering, drought, conquerors and extinction.
The Nazca Indians lived in Peru during the first millennium of theChristian Era. The Nazca had a reasonable sophisticated society, with fairly advanced craft skills. They were subsumed after a series of conquests by neighboring tribes, all of whom are now virtually extinct.
The Nazca left no great literature. They built no fabulous palaces. They were not hiding weapons of mass destruction. They didn’t memorably slaughter any other culture. In short, there is only one reason that the Nazca have been elevated above the level of historical footnote — the Nazca Lines, gigantic illustrations etched into the ground which can only be viewed from high in the air. . . . MessageToEagle.com – Thousands of huge ancient structures made of stone are clearly visible from the air.
Their age is estimated to thousands of years and their purpose remains unknown.
These puzzling wheel-shapes, and straight lines, stretch all the way from Syria to Saudi Arabia.
Some call this area the Middle East’s own version of the Nazca Lines.
It is only recently, with help of satellite images that archaeologists have been able to explore this region in more detail.
Since the launch of Google Earth in 2005, archeologists have begun to use the satellite imagery publicly, particularly since its gradual incorporation, beginning in 2007, of high-resolution images. As a result, over some Arab countries-Jordan, Syria and Lebanon particularly-the resolution of available images is now generally high enough to conduct reliable, general archeological surveys.
The Shuway-mas site south of Hayil, Saudi Arabia, which is not even mentioned in the 1998 edition of the Cambridge Illustrated History of Prehistoric Art is the home of one of the four best collections of ancient rock art in the world. An ancient astronomical alignment in southern Peru has been discovered by researchers between a pyramid, two stone lines and the setting sun during the winter solstice. During the solstice, hundreds of years ago, the three would have lined up to frame the pyramid in light.
The two stone lines, calle d geoglyphs, are located about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) east-southeast from the pyramid. They run for about 1,640 feet (500 meters), and researchers say the lines were “positioned in such a way as to frame the pyramid as one descended down the valley from the highlands.” . . .
