The film follows the story of programming prodigy and information activist Aaron Swartz. From Swartz’s help in the development of the basic internet protocol RSS to his co-founding of Reddit, his fingerprints are all over the internet. But it was Swartz’s groundbreaking work in social justice and political organizing combined with his aggressive approach to information access that ensnared him in a two-year legal nightmare. It was a battle that ended with the taking of his own life at the age of 26. Aaron’s story touched a nerve with people far beyond the online communities in which he was a celebrity. This film is a personal story about what we lose when we are tone deaf about technology and its relationship to our civil liberties.

Ron Paul Weekly Column

“The proposed ban on Internet gambling is a blatantly unconstitutional infringement on our liberties that will likely expand the surveillance state.” . . . Ron Paul in report below.

Most Americans, regardless of ideology, oppose “crony capitalism” or “cronyism.” Cronyism is where politicians write laws aimed at helping their favored business beneficiaries. Despite public opposition to cronyism, politicians still seek to use the legislative process to help special interests.

For example, Congress may soon vote on legislation outlawing Internet gambling. It is an open secret, at least inside the Beltway, that this legislation is being considered as a favor to billionaire casino owner, Sheldon Adelson. Mr. Adelson, who is perhaps best known for using his enormous wealth to advance a pro-war foreign policy, is now using his political influence to turn his online competitors into criminals. . . Video of the Day: Teens are baffled by ’90s Internet

The Fine Brothers (TheFineBros) recently put up this Youtube video in which teens react to 1990’s internet technology. The video is worth watching, yes, and the 4.8 million views seems to indicate some level of success for the production. But I got stuck reading through the nearly 18,000 comments. I’m sure the NSA controllers have a robot app for that.

Alex also talks with John Young, webmaster of Cryptome, a website that covers news on freedom of speech, cryptography, spying, and surveillance. The ISP Network Solutions shuttered Young’s site earlier in the week after he posted a document summarizing Microsoft’s dealings with law enforcement agencies.

I had a blast putting this one together. Clips from several films, graphic novels, stage performances, and, of course, soundtrack of “Conspiracy Boogie” by “The Revrand” Billy C. Wirtz. I did just a tad of animation, but you have to look really closely to find it. Editing accomplished using Corel Video Studio 4. Scripting and story boarding compiled in CELTX . . . Rick

“Yes, I believe it is in the nation’s best interest to put all the phone records into a lockbox that we could search.”

– General Keith B. Alexander, Director of the NSA, September 2013

These government chimpanzees are truly amazing.

Despite an interminable series of embarrassing scandals, they just dig their heels in further.

If they get caught spying on world leaders, they say it was for national security. If they get caught spying on citizens, they say it’s good for the nation. If they get hauled in front of Congress, they reject any idea of limiting their power.

There’s not a single bit of remorse. . . . Read Complete Report
