Moving swiftly, US eases travel and trade rules on Cuba

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration, following through on its declaration of warming ties with Cuba, has eased travel restrictions and opened a wide range of new export opportunities with the communist island.
The series of executive branch moves, taken together, have had the effect of punching a large hole in America’s half-century-old embargo, although only Congress has the authority to fully end the 54-year embargo. Again, UN General Assembly rejects U.S anti-Cuban blockade
The United Nations General Assembly voted Oct. 28 for the 23rd consecutive year on a Cuba resolution calling upon the United States to end its economic blockade against the island. Cuban ‘exodus’ blamed on failed reforms
Despite a marked increase in Cubans arriving by sea off South Florida, the U.S. Coast Guard says it does not anticipate a Mariel boatlift-type of crisis any time soon.
Between the 2,059 Cubans stopped at sea trying to land on shore and the more than 800 who actually made it here, there has been a 75 percent increase in attempted and successful migration from last fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30. . . . Read Complete Report

US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger drew up plans to “smash Cuba” with air strikes nearly 40 years ago, government papers obtained by researchers show.
He was angered by Cuba’s 1976 military intervention in Angola and was considering retaliation if Cuban forces were deployed elsewhere in Africa.

The first commercial passenger flight from Key West to Cuba in more than 50 years has landed in Havana, capping several years of efforts to reunite the two islands, though regular air service still appeared a distant prospect.

I met Alex at a Havana Pizza place. He spoke English and was keen to practise with me. I interviewed him about the realities of life in Cuba. We talk about the food shortages, the low wages and the fact that many Cuban’s have family members they have not seen for decades, living in America.
