If federal lawmakers do not pass a budget or a “continuing resolution” (CR) by Oct. 1, a government spending slowdown will take effect. This could halt almost $1 trillion in annualized spending that the CR would authorize, which is the size of the current federal deficit. If made permanent, this would cut annual federal spending by approximately 27 percent to $2.7 trillion — the current level of revenues coming in.

Republican National Convention delegates and reporters spent Sunday night partying at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida to celebrate the beginning of the convention. ]Hundreds of protesters gathered outside as Tropical Storm Isaac approached to march in opposition of the event. The Orient Road Jail has been completely emptied out in anticipation of mass arrests of protesters at the Republican National Convention next week. The booking area has been “supersized” to expedite processing of those arrested. Current inmates at the jail have either been moved to the Falkenburg Road Jail or have been let out on bond. . . .
