Dec. 13, 2012 — Volcanic waters in the cold Southern Ocean are the destination for RRS James Cook’s current expedition. Scientists are exploring a 2-mile deep water system of hydrothermal vents, calderas and cold seeps on the seabed off the coast of Antarctica.

Led by Prof Paul Tyler of the University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Science, which is based at the National Oceanography Centre, the scientists are investigating four sites that were discovered on an earlier expedition to the region. . . . Read Complete Report

When the ROV Isis  finds an interesting place on the seafloor, the sampling begins! Isis  is equipped with manipulator arms that can pick up samples to place them in boxes on the front of the vehicle, but as many deep-sea animals are very delicate, it is usually best to use the suction sampler (see image below). . . . Mass of volcanic rocks floating off New Zealand – UPDATE: Source Found

I have been reading and studying earthly mysteries almost all of my life and I have never heard of any instance of another case of rocks floating on the sea, although I can see where it could  happen. I’d like to study any other such happenings. It anyone knows of such a thing being reported before please send the details to me. Thanks. . . . EDITOR

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A mass of small volcanic rocks nearly the size of Belgium has been discovered floating off the coast of New Zealand.

The stretch of golf-ball-size pumice rocks was first spotted this week by a New Zealand air force plane about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast of Auckland. The rocks stretch for about 26,000 square kilometers (10,000 square miles). . . . Read Complete Report
