DECEMBER 11, 2012

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW– Government regulators from 193 countries are in Dubai to revise a wide-ranging communications treaty. Google has warned the event threatened the “open internet”, while the EU said the current system worked, adding: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

But the agency said action was needed to ensure investment in infrastructure to help more people access the net. “The brutal truth is that the internet remains largely [the] rich world’s privilege, ” said Dr Hamadoun Toure, secretary-general of the UN’s International Telecommunications Union, ahead of the meeting.  ”ITU wants to change that.” . . . from Science Daily

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) — NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) successfully have used an experimental version of interplanetary Internet to control an educational rover from the International Space Station. The experiment used NASA’s Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) protocol to transmit messages and demonstrate technology that one day may enable Internet-like communications with space vehicles and support habitats or infrastructure on another planet.

Space station Expedition 33 commander Sunita Williams in late October used a NASA-developed laptop to remotely drive a small LEGO robot at the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany. The European-led experiment used NASA’s DTN to simulate a scenario in which an astronaut in a vehicle orbiting a planetary body controls a robotic rover on the planet’s surface.. . . There’s A Huge Plan In The Works To Give The UN Control Of The Internet

from Business Insider

Rob LeverAgence France Presse | Oct. 29, 2012, 8:46 AM

It is expected to be the mother of all cyber diplomatic battles.

When delegates gather in Dubai in December for an obscure UN agency meeting, fighting is expected to be intense over proposals to rewrite global telecom rules to effectively give the United Nations control over the Internet.

Russia, China and other countries back a move to place the Internet under the authority of the International Telecommunications Union, a UN agency that sets technical standards for global phone calls.

U.S. officials say placing the Internet under U.N. control would undermine the freewheeling nature of cyberspace, which promotes open commerce and free expression, and could give a green light for some countries to crack down on dissidents. . .  Read Complete Report

Call for Ray Bradbury to be Honored with ‘451’ Internet Censored Message

from Common Dreams

Published on Friday, June 22, 2012 by Common Dreams

A new status code to reflect internet censorship could be named after Ray Bradbury’s most famous novel, Fahrenheit 451

– Common Dreams staff
Author Ray Bradbury died in Los Angeles on June 5, 2012, at the age of 91.
Bradbury is best known for his his dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451, published in 1953.  An indictment of authoritarianism, Fahrenheit 451 portrays a book-burning America of the near future, its central character a so-called fireman, whose job is to light the bonfires. (Fahrenheit 451refers to the temperature at which paper ignites.)Now a tribute to Bradbury has been proposed to let internet users know when a government is blocking access to a website.

We’ve all seen “404 Not Found”, “403 Forbidden” or “500 Internal Server Error” error messages, but the Internet has no message when content has been intentionally removed — for legal reasons or censorship. . . . Read Complete Report

FBI secretly creates Internet police

from Late Night in the Midlands

Posted by frank blackington on May 26, 2012 at 3:39pm

The FBI was rather public with its recent demands for backdoor access to websites and Internet services across the board, but as the agency awaits those secret surveillance powers, they’re working on their own end to have those e-spy capabilities.

Not much has been revealed about one of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s newest projects, the Domestic Communications Assistance Center, and the FBI will probably try to keep it that way. Despite attempting to keep the DCAC largely under wraps, an investigation spearheaded by Cnet’s Declan McCullagh is quickly collecting details about the agency’s latest endeavor. . . . “The US Federal Bureau of Investigation is on a mission to wiretap the Internet. With more people communicating through the Internet, traditional land-line communication is slowly becoming obsolete. The FBI is seeking to have websites alter their codes to gain access to users’ personal information, but the notion has posed a challenge and could cause a “going dark problem.” David Seaman, journalist and host of the DL Show, joins us with his take on the FBI’s request.”
