Congress is taking steps to undo the District of Columbia’s widely supported referendum legalizing marijuana for recreational use. Buried within the “cromnibus” bill passed by the House last Thursday is a measure blocking the implementation of the new pot regulations, which was approved by nearly 70 percent of DC voters in November. RT’s Manila Chan has more details.

The surface area of the United States in which you can adequately and legally hold a proper Dark Side of the Moon/Wizard of Oz viewing party just got a lot bigger: Alaska, Oregon, and the District of Columbia voted Tuesday to legalize recreational marijuana. In Alaska and Oregon, residents passed referenda that will set up regulated cannabis retail similar to the systems that voters in Colorado and Washington state approved in 2012. And D.C. voters passed Initiative 71, whichlegalizes the growing and possession of small amounts of marijuana but does not permit its sale. Optimism is a good thing, don’t you think? Some activists say FBI crime statistics will help move Texas closer to legalizing marijuana.
Mason Tvert of the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) points to new crime stats showing African Americans, while only making up about 12 percent of Texas’ population, are arrested far more often than whites for marijuana possession, reports CBS DFW.
“There is no logical reason why law enforcement officials should be spending their time arresting and prosecuting adults simply for possessing a product that is objectively less harmful than alcohol,” Tvert said. . . . Read Complete report

Rehman Bhalesha was raised around marijuana. That’s not to say that he dealt, or that he pushed, or that he used. He didn’t have to. Weed, growing up, turned up wherever he went.
