Aaron Sandusky’s case shows what can happen when federal law opposes state marijuana legislation

A federal court Monday sentenced a California man to 10 years in prison for doing something that’s legal in his state. Aaron Sandusky was convicted in October on federal charges of distributing marijuana — he is one of four defendants in the United States who have faced federal prosecutors over medical marijuana dispensaries in states where medical marijuana is legal.

Sandusky, 42, ran three dispensaries in Southern California’s Inland Empire area. Medical marijuana dispensaries have been legal according to California state law since 1996.

According to reports, Sandusky told the courtroom Monday, “I want to apologize to those with me and their families who have been victimized by the federal government who has not recognized the voters of this state.” . . . Read Complete Report

Advocates for hemp legalization are gaining momentum, with Kentucky lawmakers making the biggest push

Kentucky was America’s leading hemp producer in the early 19th century.  Now, 200 years later, after a historic election for drug policy has led to a shift for marijuana policy reform in America, Kentucky lawmakers are taking steps to revive the crop.

marijuana Stamp SOURCE Himp For Victory videoWhile advocates for hemp legalization say the plant could bring a wealth of green jobs to Kentucky, deep-rooted drug stigma and conflict with federal law have made passing the legislation unlikely. Nonetheless, two state bills are in the works, while a federal proposal aims to clear the way for state legalization. Lawmakers suggest the bills could at least open up the conversation about hemp, and clear up misconceptions about its use. . . . Read Complete Report

From reason.com

Oregon came relatively close to legalizing marijuana in 2012. Measure 80, which would have allowed licensed commercial sales and unlicensed personal cultivation, had very little financial backing and no support from major legalization groups, yet nevertheless garnered 46.5 percent of the vote.

What would happen if Oregon legalization advocates had the financial and policy support that went into Colorado and Washington? According to the Marijuana Policy Project’s Steve Fox, we may find out in 2016: . . . Read Complete Report

Supernatural phenomena or just unfamiliar territory?

This is a story about climbing a mountain path in the Redwood Forest north of Santa Cruz and close to San Francisco.

Friends took me on a sight-seeing tour to a place called “Mystery Spot,” elaborating, “This is a must-see!” Thus, on a sunny October day, we began an excursion to the Mystery Spot in the Redwoods.

An immense wooden gate towers over the parking lot at the entrance. The area we came to explore covers approximately 150 sq. ft. The cost is $5.00 per person, and a guide shepherds small groups to the spot—about six people at a time. . . . Read complete Report

Google’s Robot Cars Go to California Governor for Approval

from NBC San Diago

California’s legislators have approved Google’s robot cars on public roads Wednesday and now the governor can decides the bill’s fate.

If the bill is signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, it would greatly change how cars would be made and driven — namely by computers, according to the San Jose Mercury News. About 99 percent of all traffic and fatal collisions are caused by human error, so robots might be a safer bet. Read Complete Report

EL DORADO COUNTY (CBS13) – People from all over El Dorado County say they’re hearing loud booms several times a week, but there are many theories on what is causing them.

“I thought it was thunder,” said one person.

“It’s definitely not thunder; too consistent. I thought it was just mining,” said another person.

“I always considered them to be sonic booms from flying aircrafts for years,” said Loring Brunius, owner of Sierra Rock Diamond Quarry. . . . Read Complete Report

Secret X-37B Mini Space Shuttle Could Land Today (w/ video)

from Universe Today

by Nancy Atkinson on June 13, 2012

After more than a year in orbit, the US Air Force’s clandestine mini-space shuttle will likely land at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California sometime this week, with some reports saying it could land as early as today, Wednesday, June 13, 2012. It has been in orbit since March 5, 2011, but like the first X-37Bmission that flew in 2010 and spent 224 days in space, the Air Force has not issued any information of what the craft is doing or where it is orbiting. However, amateur skywatchers and amateur satellite trackers have been keeping an eye on where the OTV-2 has been. . . . Read Complete Report

1st X-37B Space Plane Takeoff

from youtube

Uploaded by on May 22, 2010

Last month’s launch of the US Air Force X-37B secret mini space plane has fueled speculation about the real mission of this vehicle and if it could possibly be used for a new type of military weapon. The X-37B launched on April 22, 2010 and has the ability to stay in orbit for up to 270 days. While the Air Force provided a webcast of the launch, since then there has been no word — leaked or official about the status of the mission. The X-37B will land unpiloted at Edwards Air Force Base in California. It uses solar arrays and lithium ion batteries to generate power instead of fuel cells like the space shuttle, a major reason why it can stay on orbit for much longer.

Letter from California: A New Look at the Donner Party

Volume 65 Number 3, May/June 2012

by Julie Schablitsky

The Native American perspective on a notorious chapter in American history is being revealed by the excavation and study of a pioneer campsite

In late October 1846, an early snowstorm stranded 22 men, women, and children in Alder Creek meadow in California’s Sierra Nevada. The squall came on so fiercely and suddenly that the pioneers had just enough time to erect sleeping tents and a small structure of pine trees covered with branches, quilts, and the rubber coats off their backs. Living conditions were crowded, and their wool and flannel clothes were useless against leaks and the damp ground. As time passed, seasoned wood became so hard to find that the stranded pioneers, known as the Donner Party, were often without fire for days. Huddled under makeshift shelters, the migrants ate charred bone and boiled hides until they turned to more desperate measures to survive. Today the people of the Donner Party are remembered for cannibalizing their dead in a last-ditch effort to survive. . . . Read Complete Report
