The US army is working to limit its dependence on GPS by developing the next generation of navigation technology, including a tiny autonomous chip, the director of the Pentagon’s research agency said Wednesday.

DARPA, the research group behind a range of spy tech and which helped invent the Internet, was also the driving force behind the creation of the Global Positioning System, director Arati Prabhakar said at a press conference. . . . Read Complete Report

150 Pounds Marijuana Barred From Evidence Because Of GPS

A federal judge has ruled that law enforcement illegally placed a GPS tracking device on a Kentucky man’s car, and has barred prosecutors from using 150 pounds of marijuana discovered in a subsequent search of the vehicle.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Kentucky State Police found the cannabis in a car belonging to 49-year-old Robert Dale Lee near Lexington in September 2011 because they used the GPS tracking device to follow him without a warrant authorizing it, concluded U.S. District Judge Amul R. GPS monitors can track your every movement. Brain scans can now see lies forming in your brain. And advancements in genetic engineering may soon allow parents to engineer what their children will look and be like.

These new technologies are “challenging our Constitutional categories in really dramatic ways,” says George Washington University law professor Jeffrey Rosen. “And what’s so striking is that none of the existing amendments give clear answers to the most basic questions we’re having today.”

On Wednesday’s Fresh Air, Rosen, the co-editor of the new book Constitution 3.0: Freedom and Technological Change, details how technological changes that were unimaginable at the time of the Founding Fathers are challenging our notions of things like personal vs. private space, freedom of speech and our own individual autonomy. . . continue report.
