Marijuana use for adults 21 and over is legal in Colorado and Washington, but any wannabe toking tourists headed here from other countries might want to keep quiet about it until they get here.

According to reports in the Canadian press, simply admitting to a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agent that you’ve smoked pot or that you plan to smoke pot apparently can get you turned away at the border — and perhaps permanently banned from the good ol’ U.S. of A because marijuana is still illegal under federal laws. . .  Read Complete Report

By William Breathes in HempNews Monday, December 2, 2013 at 10:20 am

Back in October, we shared with you the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s draft regulations for the growing of industrial hemp. Now, those regulations are official — with one change. Instead of facing a registration suspension or revocation if testing reveals that a grower’s plants exceed 0.3 percent THC, the final rules say that a grower will not be subject to any penalty as long as the “crop is destroyed or utilized in a manner approved of and verified by” the state agriculture commissioner.

Keep reading for the full list of hemp regulations. . . . Read Complete Report

Marijuana: Colorado NORML finds timing of pot raids suspicious

Industrial Hemp

EXCERPTS

” After doing research and noting the worldwide market for hemp, in July 1998, the Tribal Council approved ‘industrial hemp agriculture’ for the reservation. With demand high for the crop, three Lakota farmers, Tom Cook, his wife Afraid of Bear and American Horse grandson of Chief American Horse formed the Slim Butte Land-Use Association.[100] To emphasize the issue of Sioux sovereignty in land use, they publicly announced the first planting of industrial hemp seeds on April 29, 2000, on the 132nd anniversary of the signing of the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty, which established the reservation. The Association believed production of industrial hemp-based concrete could help solve the severe shortage of suitable dwellings on the reservation, as it is a sustainable construction material, and work for the unemployed. Hemp can also be processed to yield oil for cooking and other products. . . . In August 2000 and July 2001, federal DEA agents destroyed industrial hemp crops on the Pine Ridge reservation.” . . . From “Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (Wikipedia)

Hemp legalization added to Senate farm bill

It’s hard for people to wrap their brain around the fact that growing hemp for fiber is different than growing “marijuana” for partying.  When you grow it for the cordage you plant it close together so it grows tightly and tall side by side with no room for grow leaves to grow the first five feet or so of stalk. For the smokin’ kind you space them far apart so the leaves and flowers have plenty of sunshine and room to grow the valuable buds. . . . EDITOR

In a last minute addition to the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) has submitted an amendment that would legalize the production of industrial hemp, a potential new bumper crop for U.S. farmers.

“Industrial hemp is used in many healthy and sustainable consumer products. However, the federal prohibition on growing industrial hemp has forced companies to needlessly import raw materials from other countries,” Wyden said in prepared text. “My amendment to the Farm Bill will change federal policy to allow U.S. farmers to produce hemp for these safe and legitimate products right here, helping both producers and suppliers to grow and improve Oregon’s economy in the process.”

Allowing American farmers to produce industrial hemp, which is different from its more notorious cousin marijuana, would yield significant and immediate profits the first year, according to an analysis conducted in 1998 (PDF) by the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Kentucky. . . .Read Complete Report
