Robotics: Brain implant designed for prosthesis

From DefenseTech

by MIKE HOFFMAN on MARCH 23, 2013

The pursuit to develop a bionic arm that can connect to the human brain took a step forward with the Tuesday announcement that National Institutes of Health scientists had developed a wireless brain implant that operates a prosthesis.

The implant translates the electronic activity sparked by the brain and turns it into a digital signal that can move the prosthesis. The key, though, is that the implant is wireless and connects directly to the prosthesis without the need of additional wires. . . . Read Complete Report

Einstein’s Brain Reveals Clues to Genius (W/Video)

Einstein’s brain had extraordinary folding patterns in several regions, which may help explain his genius, newly uncovered photographs suggest.

The photographs, published Nov. 16 in the journal Brain, reveal that the brilliant physicist had extra folding in his brain’s gray matter, the site of conscious thinking. In particular, the frontal lobes, regions tied to abstract thought and planning, had unusually elaborate folding, analysis suggests. . . . Read Complete Report

The Extraordinary Genius of Albert Einstein

Uploaded on Aug 23, 2010

The core of the video is a workshop pedagogical on the Theory of Special Relativity as part of the educational process conducted by our youth leadership, not for the sake of understanding the theory itself, but using Einstein’s particular discovery as a case study to demonstrate and walk people through real human thinking, as being something above sense perceptions or opinions.  . . . Brain Waves Transformed into Music

from Live Science

Stephanie Pappas, LiveScience Senior Writer
Date: 14 November 2012 Time: 05:10 PM ET

Ever wondered what your brain sounds like when it thinks? Researchers in China did — so they invented a way to translate the brain’s waves into music.

In initial attempts, the scientists had ended up with tunes that were jangly and sometimes discordant, but more recently they discovered a way to make brain music sound better by combining data from the brain’s electrical impulses with brain blood-flow measurements. Besides combining science with art, the researchers hope that, one day, brain music can be used to help people control their brain waves, easing conditions such as anxiety and depression. . . . All Things Big and Small: The Brain’s Discerning Taste for Size

from Science Daily

ScienceDaily (June 20, 2012) — The human brain can recognize thousands of different objects, but neuroscientists have long grappled with how the brain organizes object representation; in other words, how the brain perceives and identifies different objects. Now researchers at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) and the MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences have discovered that the brain organizes objects based on their physical size, with a specific region of the brain reserved for recognizing large objects and another reserved for small objects.

Their findings, to be published in the June 21 issue of Neuron, could have major implications for fields like robotics, and could lead to a greater understanding of how the brain organizes and maps information. . . . Read Complete Report

Retro: Monkey’s brain controls robot arm (video)

From monkeys to humans to tin-men?

Here is another report to add to our “Robots into Humans” Research archives.  Sometimes I have to make sure I’m awake when I study my research on this subject. It’s moving in leaps and bounds.

My preliminary investigation indicates that the Controllers are very interested in the progress of creating robots who take on the abilities of humans. After all they’ll need somebody to pick the melons. . . . EDITOR

The monkeys were able to use the robot arm to feed themselves treats

Monkeys have been able to control robotic limbs using only their thoughts, scientists report.

The animals were able to feed themselves using prosthetic arms, which were controlled by brain activity.

Small probes, the width of a human hair, were inserted into the monkeys’ primary motor cortex – the region of the brain that controls movement.

Writing in Nature journal, the authors said their work could eventually help amputees and people who are paralyzed.

Lead researcher Dr Andrew Schwartz, who is based at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, said: “We are beginning to understand how the brain works using brain-machine interface technology.. . . Read Complete Report

When do robots replace you ?

Uploaded by on Oct 22, 2009

are we headed into the robotics age and do not even realize it , are we using technology too soon before the debate , is there even a debate , should we slow down the integration of robotics into society , it would be fine if we had angels in charge and not the military machine, why is it that all robots being devoleped are for killing , will robots completely replace soldiers , do we even care that robots are for ending life instead of helping life , just some questions you should ask a friend

It is now possible to manipulate brainwaves with specific frequencies which can produce various desired effects on a human test subject. In this video Dan Dicks of Press For Truth goes over a multitude of patents that have been filed for inventions and devices that are capable of producing altered states of consciousness in human beings for the purposes of control.

The current number of cell phone users today is 4.77 Billion and that figure continues to exponentially rise! Decades of cell phone use have now passed with a new generation of people coming into the world who have not experienced life without these devices! In this video Dan Dicks of Press For Truth goes over what the phone companies are telling you is a safe and acceptable level of exposure compared to what military documents have reported on as far back as the 1970’s in terms of the clinical effects of microwaves and radio frequency radiation on human beings.

Summary:
Researchers are closer to creating underwater robotic creatures with a brain of their own — besides behaving like the real thing. In the near future, it would not be too tall an order for the team to produce a swarm of autonomous tiny robotic sea turtles and fishes for example, to perform hazardous missions such as detecting nuclear wastes underwater or other tasks too dangerous for humans. . . . The mainstream media is reporting that suspected Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis carved the phrases “My ELF Weapon” and “Better off this way” into his weapon before 12 people were reportedly killed with it in a mass shooting this week. ELF typically stands for extremely low frequency, the type of waves used in everything from weather weapons to mind control devices. . . . From Description published with the video.

The recent U.N call for a moratorium on the development of remotely controlled weapon systems has raised some interesting issues and debate. While the tone of the announcement by U.N Special Rapporteur, Christof Heyns, rather dryly refers to LARs or lethal autonomous robots the story was then picked up by numerous news sites with headlines pitting killer robots against the U.N.

The subject of intelligent machines and what they mean for humanity is open to much interpretation but the majority of opinion often seems to suggest a rather dysoptian future. From serious academic papers – War in the age of intelligent machines to widespread blockbuster entertainment –Terminator Salvation – the picture painted is not too rosy. While there are some commentators that suggest machines will be our wise, helpful companions, using their superior brain power simply to ease our lives, this is not the default position. . . . Most TED talks if not all are thought provoking. The one given by moral philosopher Peter Singer on effective altruism (see Video 1) at TED 2013 Longbeach (CA) is no exception. This talk is actually a call for action. We don’t need to be billionaires to help others around the world. We can either offer part of our time or our money. However, this emotion-driven reaction can be leveraged by using our brains to figure out the most effective way to use resources we have at hand.

What’s the connection with robotics? The answer to this question lies in another question: What can roboticists, do to change the world for the better? As a matter of fact, there are already people that use robots in projects that positively impacts our society or our planet. . . . Read Complete Report w/videos
