Eric Garner protests erupt in New York, Washington

Eric Garner. Photo by Pete Voelker Source: Vice (Fair Use).

Although the mainstream media are using Eric Garner in conjunction with the Michael Brown case they are completely different. And the differences are perfectly clear.

Michael Brown was a punk and a bully who was running from a strong-arm robber he had commented a few minutes before. Michael Brown was killed because he had commented a crimes and did not want to be arrested.

Eric Garner was selling loose cigarettes.  He was fighting back against an unjust tax on cigarettes.  A tax which created the black-market Mr. Garner was serving.

While we at THEI disagree with the protests against the Michael Brown grand jury findings. We just as strongly join with the peaceful protesters in the Eric Garner case and take up the war cry “I Can’t Breathe”.

Over the years we have featured many stories on the merging police state, the militarization of our police departments and the growing police brutality in our country. It’s not just a problem in the black communities it’s also happening in poor white neighborhoods and on our nations highways. These cases are usually only reported by local media.  By careful selection of which stories to “report” the mainstream media helps in the Controllers divide and conquer plans. By hooking the Brown and Garner cases together it adds to the civil unrest needed to help create the smokescreen the Controllers need at this time. Smoke, Baby, Smoke. . . EDITOR

Demonstrators took to the streets of New York City and Washington, DC on Wednesday, protesting the non-indictment of a police officer who killed unarmed African-American man Eric Garner. The 43-year-old father of six was selling loose cigarettes when confronted by the New York City Police Department and placed in a chokehold that ultimately killed him. RT’s Alexey Yaroshevsky is in on the ground in New York while Manuel Rapalo is in Washington.

Lt. Tony Ryan, board member for L.E.A.P. (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) and retired Denver police officer after 36 years of service, says;

“The War on drugs is a disaster for law enforcement. A total failure at reducing use or crime, that costs billions of dollars while making the problem worse and enriching drug dealers.”

One or more representatives of L.E.A.P. will present the case against pot prohibition (and other drugs) this weekend in Merrillville, Indiana.

Police State USA: Officer cleared after going to wrong address, shooting innocent grandpa in his garage

Officer cleared after going to wrong address, shooting innocent grandpa in his garage

“FORT WORTH, TX — An elderly man was slain in his own garage because police “inadvertently began searching” the wrong address while investigating a burglary call.  Spotting a man who appeared “standoffish” in his own garage, police opened fire, killing a 72-year-old grandfather.  After months of investigation, the officer has been cleared and is back on the streets.”

This type of incident is why the Indiana law makes sense and will save innocent lives. It forces officers, on fear of death, to identify themselves both audibly and visibly to avoid being shot justifiably. And it just might save the lives of every day citizens, although that doesn’t seem to be a concern of nearly enough cops.

The scandals keep piling up for one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the US. Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca had to admit that his department gave preferential treatment when hiring dozens deputies. Some of the deputies had troubling criminal histories. Then there are the 18 deputies facing federal charges for abuse in the jail system. RT’s Ramon Galindo explains the litany of problems LA County’s top cop is facing.

THEI Supports Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP)

Dear Supporter:

We recently celebrated the anniversary of a very significant day in reform movement history. December 5, 2013 marked the 80th anniversary of Repeal Day, on which alcohol prohibition was repealed and the 21st Amendment, regulating the legal sale of alcohol, was ratified. For all of us at Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, Repeal Day represents the attainability of our goal: ending the more enduring, infinitely more harmful and complex policy of drug prohibition. It’s incredible how far the drug policy reform movement has come just in the past year or two, and our success is owed to supporters like you.

This has been an outstanding year for LEAP. Let’s take a look at some of LEAP’s 2013 achievements by the numbers:

LEAP banner Website

788,290. Number of views to date of LEAP co-founder Captain Peter Christ’s YouTube video, “Retired Police Captain Demolishes the War on Drugs.” The video first went viral in March, and since then, viewers all over the world have contacted LEAP about Peter’s common sense argument for ending drug prohibition.

54,293. Number of signatures to date on LEAP’s Change.org petition since its launch in August. LEAP petitioned Attorney General Eric Holder, asking the Department of Justice to Stop Funding Racially Biased Marijuana Arrests.

36,680. Number of dollars LEAP supporters contributed to finance the production of a documentary film about LEAP leading 2012’s Caravan for Peace. In just 45 days, LEAP’s crowdfunding campaign, “Cops Lead Drug War Victims on a Journey for Peace,” drew enough interest to surpass our goal and secure the funding we needed to edit and distribute our footage. The film will be released in 2014, and is sure to become an inspiring piece of drug reform history.

More than 1,700.
Number of LEAP presentations and appearances to date in 2013, including more than 1,000 media appearances and more than 700 in-person presentations. Our 170 speakers have been incredibly busy spreading LEAP’s message of legalization and regulation this year. We’re reaching millions, and we are able to do all that we do because of you, our loyal supporters.

Our speakers are more in-demand than ever, and we have big plans for 2014, including targeted campaigns in a number of states on the verge of legalizing marijuana. We need your help in keeping our momentum rolling. Please make a tax deductible contribution to LEAP today and count yourselfamong those who are an integral part of ending drug prohibition.

Thank you so much for your continued support, and have a wonderful holiday season.
