First time-travel movies reveal surreal universe (Video)

From New Scientist TV posted by Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

Time travel in the real world isn’t yet possible. But thanks to new physics flicks, you can now experience an alternate universe to see what it might look like.

Developed by Wolfgang Schleich and colleagues at the University of Ulm in Germany, these first time-travel videos mathematically recreate the weird world of Gödel’s universe. In the first clip, a camera is placed at the centre of this cylindrical universe, simulating what an Earth-like object would look like. Because light behaves differently in this space, as the sphere moves away from you, you see an image of both the front and the back. If it moves above you, it appears as a collection of slices. During its orbit, you see many versions from different time periods all at once. . . . Read Complete Report

Maindrian Pace (H.B. Halicki) is a master car thief who heads an elaborate organization of professionals. Using an insurance investigation company as a front, Pace and his associates buy junked cars from accident scenes, steal new autos of the same model and color, then switch the serial numbers for resale. It’s a lucrative business, but when some shady characters offer them 400,000 dollars to deliver 50 specific luxury vehicles, the challenge is too much to pass up. The burglars put on disguises and waste no time in lifting limousines, official racecars, and Rolls-Royces (even stopping by a television studio to steal actor Lyle Waggoner’s convertible). When Pace discovers that a recently stolen Cadillac has a million dollars worth of heroin in the trunk, he destroys the car and the drugs, which infuriates his adversarial partner, Eugene (Jerry Daugirda). Just as Pace is stealing a bright yellow Mustang (code-named Eleanor), the Los Angeles police department gives chase, tipped off by Eugene’s anonymous call. This leads to the meat of the film, a wild 40-minute pursuit which takes Pace and the police through five cities and leads to the destruction of 93 cars. Gone in 60 Seconds was a big hit for first time director/writer/producer/star H.B. Halicki, and inspired a big-budget remake in 2000.

Saturday Night Drive-In Double Feature “Vanishing Point” Starring Barry Newman + Second High Octane Feature & Selected Short Subjects

Vanishing Point 1971

Kowalski works for a car delivery service. He takes delivery of a 1970 Dodge Challenger to take from Colorado to San Francisco, California. Shortly after pickup, he takes a bet to get the car there in less than 15 hours. After a few run-ins with motorcycle cops and highway patrol they start a chase to bring him into custody. Along the way, Kowalski is guided by Supersoul – a blind DJ with a police radio scanner. Throw in lots of chase scenes, gay hitchhikers, a naked woman riding a motorbike, lots of Mopar and you’ve got a great cult hit from the early 70’s.

Drive-In Saturday Night Double Feature: “The Wild One” starring Marlon Brando & Lee Marvin + Second Exciting Feature & Selected Short Subjects

The Wild One with Marlon Brando was the first biker movie and what first brought the biker gangs like California’s Hell’s Angels to American folklore. The Wild One was based on a biker “riot” that took place in the small town of Hollister California on July 4, 1948. . . Your Editor Dennis Crenshaw

As Wikipedia explains:

“The Hollister riot was an event that occurred at the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA)-sanctioned Gypsy Tour motorcycle rally in Hollister, California from July 3 to 6, 1947.

Many more motorcyclists than expected flooded the small town to watch the annual rallies as well as to socialize and drink. A few of the motorcyclists got out of control and caused a commotion in the town, although at the end of the event, the damage was considered minor.

The incident, known afterwards as the Hollister riot, was sensationalized by the press with reports of bikers “taking over the town” and “pandemonium” in Hollister.[4] The strongest dramatization of the event was a staged photo of a drunken man sitting on a motorcycle surrounded by beer bottles. It was published in Life magazine and it brought national attention and negative opinion to the event. The Hollister riot helped to give rise to the outlaw biker image. . . . Read Complete Report

Drive-In Saturday Night Double Feature: “Suddenly” starring Frank Sinatra + Second Explosive Feature & Selected Short Subjects

Welcome to a new category here on THEI.  Every Saturday we will be presenting a tribute to the number 1 entertainment media in America “back in the day” – The Drive-In Theater. In the late 1940’s and throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s the growing popularity of the family car led to a new American pastime, watching movies from your car. So, on every Saturday, especially in the summer, we would grab a dollar out of the cookie jar (a buck a carload) and head out to the outskirts of almost any American town or city and enjoy the movies.

Unfortunately with the popularity of Television beginning in the 1960’s and the greater profits from the land that the drive-ins were built on being so good from the tract homes being built for the growing number of young baby boomers families it became unprofitable to own a Drive-In Theater. The Drive-In Theater was history and the sprawling suburbs swallowed them up.

With the passing of the Drive-In Movie we also lost the venue for the mostly Grade-B movies that was their staple. (be they good, bad or indifferent)

THEI is proud to bring some of those lost and forgotten films and Selected Short subjects back in this series of postings.  I hope you enjoy this ongoing tribute. . . Your Editor Dennis Crenshaw

Hollow Mars?

Huge, deep hole on Mars leaves scientists baffled

Fox News

A depression huge and deep on Mars has left astronomers baffled.

It was discovered by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (NRO), which has been studying the Martian surface for 11 years. The vast pit, estimated to be hundreds of feet across and surrounded by frozen carbon dioxide, is located on the south pole of Mars— sticking out among the Swiss cheese terrain of Earth’s closest neighbor. . . . Hollywood, Military Cooperation Often Mutually Beneficial

By Steven Donald Smith
American Forces Press Service

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 21, 2006 – Hollywood’s depiction of the U.S. military is often laughably inaccurate to many Americans who wear their country’s uniform. This is not for lack of effort on the part of the military services and the Defense Department.

To achieve maximum accuracy in movies and on television, the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and DoD have liaison offices to help guide filmmakers through the process. The services operate independently of each other in this endeavor but share office space on the same floor of a Los Angeles building. The Defense Department’s entertainment media division is run from the Pentagon. . . Continue at Defense.gov

Hollywood Produces Government Propaganda Films

YouTube ~ Mark Dice

Published on May 4, 2016

(((Subscribe))) now for more! http://bit.ly/1QHJwaK Hollywood has a long history of producing government propaganda films masked as innocent entertainment. From Disney using Donald Duck to persuade people to pay their income taxes in The Spirit of ’43 to blockbuster films like Red Dawn and Zero Dark Thirty. Media analyst Mark Dice reveals the true power of American cinema.

The “Wonderful” World of Disney

Published on Jul 9, 2015

The Spirit of ’43 is an American animated World War II propaganda film created by Walt Disney Studios in 1942 and released in January 1943. The film stars Donald Duck, and arguably contains the first appearance of the character Scrooge McDuck, although Scrooge is not named in the film. It is a sequel to The New Spirit. The purpose of the film is to encourage patriotic Americans to file and pay their income taxes faithfully in order to help the war effort. The repeated theme in the film is “Taxes…To Defeat the Axis.”

In the film, Donald Duck is portrayed as an everyman who has just received his weekly pay. He is met by two physical manifestations of his personality — the classic “good angel on one shoulder, bad devil on the other shoulder” dilemma common to cartoons of the time — identified as the “thrifty saver” and the “spendthrift.”
