UT Austin sociologist Sarah Brayne spent 2.5 years conducting field research with the LAPD as they rolled out Predpol, a software tool that is supposed to direct police to places where crime is likely to occur, but which has been shown to send cops out to overpolice brown and poor people at the expense of actual crimefighting.

Brayne observed and interviewed more than 75 cops to get a picture of how the job of policing is changed by big data-based “predictive” tools. She found that the tools changed police from a law-enforcement agency to an intelligence agency, concerned more with surveilling people who had not committed a crime than to interdicting or solving crimes in the world. . . . Venezuela’s leftist dictator Nicolas Maduro plans to proceed with a vote to create a new constituent assembly to replace the country’s opposition-controlled Congress with a friendly constituent assembly, potentially enabling the embattled despot to redraft the country’s constitution and officially marginalize his political opponents, despite the US’s repeated ythreats of “strong and swift economic action.”

In response to the US’s threats of sanctions, the country’s senior leadership have accused Sen. Marco Rubio and CIA Director Mike Pompeo of “conspiring to overthrow” the country’s floundering leftist government and replace it with a friendlier regime, according to the Miami Herald. The escalation belies the healthy business relationship between the two countries, which is centered on the US’s purchases of hundreds of thousands of barrels of Venezuelan oil a day. . . .

“What this group is trying to do with Venezuela is basically divide the government, recognize other leaders and foment a conflict with the Venezuelans,” said Carlos Ron, the chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of Venezuela, to a small group of reporters in Washington on Tuesday. WASHINGTON (CN) – Investigators once tasked with examining the assassination of President John F. Kennedy claim in court that the CIA won’t respond to requests for records it might have on covert surveillance of them.

Dan Hardway, Edwin Lopez and G. Robert Blakey each worked on the House Select Committee on Assassinations in the late 1970s. Hardaway and Lopez, who are now attorneys in West Virginia and New York, respectively, served on the committee as investigators from 1977 to 1978.

Blakey, now retired, was a government attorney and law professor at Cornell and Notre Dame who also served as chief counsel and staff director for the committee until its dissolution in 1979.

In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Washington, D.C. federal court, Hardway, Lopez and Blakey say they filed a Freedom of Information Act request in May, requesting “201 files” or “soft files” on themselves. . . . Read Complete Report
