Report Reveals Wider Tracking of Mail in U.S.

From The New York Times

WASHINGTON — In a rare public accounting of its mass surveillance program, the United States Postal Service reported that it approved nearly 50,000 requests last year from law enforcement agencies and its own internal inspection unit to secretly monitor the mail of Americans for use in criminal and national security investigations.

The number of requests, contained in a 2014 audit of the surveillance program by the Postal Service’s inspector general, shows that the surveillance program is more extensive than previously disclosed and that oversight protecting Americans from potential abuses is lax. . . . Read Complete Report

Thanks to recent revelations, we now know that NSA agents have been illegally using their surveillance powers to monitor their spouses’ and other romantic interests’ electronic communications. Will this new information put an end to the widespread “I don’t have anything to hide” defense of NSA spying? If not, what will it take to convince more Americans to take an interest in defending their civil liberties against the encroachments of the growing surveillance state?

Our panel discusses these and other critical topics in the struggle to win back Americans’ privacy from intrusive government spying.

Hastings became a vocal critic of the surveillance state during the investigation of reporters by the US Department of Justice in 2013, referring to the restrictions on the freedom of the press by the Obama administration as a “war” on journalism.[5] His last story, “Why Democrats Love To Spy On Americans”, was published by BuzzFeed on June 7.[6] Hastings died in a fiery high-speed automobile crash on June 18, 2013 in Los Angeles, California.

Days after the name Edward Snowden made headlines for being the source behind one of the most significant leaks involving the National Security Agency’s surveillance of Americans, the former employee of the CIA has gone into hiding. The whistleblower, who some are calling a hero, has been fired for violating his company’s code of ethics and now the Obama administration is on the hunt for the leaker. Many believe that Snowden’s fate has already been determined and Michael Brooks, producer for The Majority Report, and Jesselyn Raddack with the Government Accountability Project, weigh in on the Obama administration’s hunt for the Snowden.

FISA spy bill could be renewed without discussion (Video Report)

The US Senate has the opportunity to hear discussion before a vote on renewing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, but they might not even bother. Although reauthorizing FISA and the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 (FAA) would allow the government to warrantlessly wiretap the emails and phones of millions of Americans, one Republican senator has asked his colleagues on Capitiol Hill to approve the bill without debate. Will Congress skip discussions in order to renew FISA for another five years? Liz Wahl speaks with RT producer Adriana Usero about what the FISA vote means for personal privacy in the US.

Privacy advocates point to latest DC scandal as evidence of growing problem

The continuing turmoil surrounding David Petraeus’s sexual escapades with biographer Paula Broadwell has privacy-rights activists crying foul. Not over Petraeus’s affair, but over how seemingly easy it is for the FBI to gain access to multiple private email accounts without a warrant, and to do so for relatively insignificant reasons.

FBI’s abuse of the surveillance state is the real scandal needing investigation

That the stars of America’s national security establishment are being devoured by out-of-control surveillance is a form of sweet justice

The Petraeus scandal is receiving intense media scrutiny obviously due to its salacious aspects, leaving one, as always, to fantasize about what a stellar press corps we would have if they devoted a tiny fraction of this energy to dissecting non-sex political scandals (this unintentionally amusing New York Times headline from this morning – “Concern Grows Over Top Military Officers’ Ethics” – illustrates that point: with all the crimes committed by the US military over the last decade and long before, it’s only adultery that causes “concern” over their “ethics”). Nonetheless, several of the emerging revelations are genuinely valuable, particularly those involving the conduct of the FBI and the reach of the US surveillance state. . . . Read Complete Report
