NASA’s SAMPEX Mission: A Space Weather Warrior

from Science Daily

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2012) — NASA’s very first small explorer, the Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer or SAMPEX, was launched July 3, 1992 to study the zoo of particles and cosmic rays surrounding Earth. Surviving much longer than its expected mission of three years and providing invaluable observations for those who study space weather, the SAMPEX mission is now almost over. In early November, the spacecraft’s orbit will decay enough that it will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, burning up completely on re-entry. . . . Read Complete Report

Spacewalkers use improvised tools to free up stuck bolt, install power box

By Denise Chow

Two spacewalking astronauts successfully replaced a vital power unit on the International Space Station on Wednesday, defeating a stubborn bolt that originally delayed the fix with the help of some improvised tools made of spare parts and a toothbrush.

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and Japanese spaceflier Akihiko Hoshide performed the spacewalk repair. The fix-it job in space was actually an extra spacewalk tacked onto their mission after the stuck space station bolt prevented the astronauts from properly installing the power unit — called a main bus switching unit, or MBSU — on the outpost’s backbone-like truss on Aug. 30. . . . MessageToEagle.com – Thousands of huge ancient structures made of stone are clearly visible from the air.

Their age is estimated to thousands of years and their purpose remains unknown.

These puzzling wheel-shapes, and straight lines, stretch all the way from Syria to Saudi Arabia.

Some call this area the Middle East’s own version of the Nazca Lines.

It is only recently, with help of satellite images that archaeologists have been able to explore this region in more detail.

Since the launch of Google Earth in 2005, archeologists have begun to use the satellite imagery publicly, particularly since its gradual incorporation, beginning in 2007, of high-resolution images. As a result, over some Arab countries-Jordan, Syria and Lebanon particularly-the resolution of available images is now generally high enough to conduct reliable, general archeological surveys.

The Shuway-mas site south of Hayil, Saudi Arabia, which is not even mentioned in the 1998 edition of the Cambridge Illustrated History of Prehistoric Art is the home of one of the four best collections of ancient rock art in the world. Here we find, numerous ancient stone kites, mounds, and tails. . . . Read Complete Report w/photos

Oceans on Titan a near-certainty according to Cassini spacecraft

As we continue to explore deeper and deeper into outer space I believe we will find that there is more water in the Universe than we can imagine. Just like there is more life out there than we can imagine. . . . EDITOR

The icy surface of Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, is almost certainly hiding an ocean of liquid water according to data received by NASA from its Cassini spacecraft. The finding could shed light on the mystery of how methane in Titan’s atmosphere is replenished.

NASA’s conclusion is based on the extent to which Titan changes shape as it orbits Saturn. Titan elongates with proximity to the gas giant, and reverts to a more spherical form when farther away. But it is the extent of this “bulging” that has surprised NASA scientists.. . . Read Complete Report

Secret X-37B Mini Space Shuttle Could Land Today (w/ video)

from Universe Today

by Nancy Atkinson on June 13, 2012

After more than a year in orbit, the US Air Force’s clandestine mini-space shuttle will likely land at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California sometime this week, with some reports saying it could land as early as today, Wednesday, June 13, 2012. It has been in orbit since March 5, 2011, but like the first X-37Bmission that flew in 2010 and spent 224 days in space, the Air Force has not issued any information of what the craft is doing or where it is orbiting. However, amateur skywatchers and amateur satellite trackers have been keeping an eye on where the OTV-2 has been. . . . Read Complete Report

1st X-37B Space Plane Takeoff

from youtube

Uploaded by on May 22, 2010

Last month’s launch of the US Air Force X-37B secret mini space plane has fueled speculation about the real mission of this vehicle and if it could possibly be used for a new type of military weapon. The X-37B launched on April 22, 2010 and has the ability to stay in orbit for up to 270 days. While the Air Force provided a webcast of the launch, since then there has been no word — leaked or official about the status of the mission. The X-37B will land unpiloted at Edwards Air Force Base in California. It uses solar arrays and lithium ion batteries to generate power instead of fuel cells like the space shuttle, a major reason why it can stay on orbit for much longer.

Update to a story we presented om June 6, “U.S. Spy Satellite Agency Gives NASA 2 Space Telescopes” . . . EDITOR

from Zen Gardner

Monday, June 11th, 2012.

Who dumps technology more advanced than NASA on to NASA and thinks nothing of it? This admission of at least this segment of a secretive space program is quite revealing. It will probably slip by mainstream media, but sit up and take notice, this is a serious admission here.

NASA gets two military spy telescopes for astronomy

(Washington Post) The secretive government agency that flies spy satellites has made a stunning gift to NASA: two exquisite telescopes as big and powerful as the Hubble Space Telescope. They’ve never left the ground and are in storage in Rochester, N.Y.

It’s an unusual technology transfer from the military-intelligence space program to the better-known civilian space agency. It could be a boost for NASA’s troubled science program, which is groaning under the budgetary weight of the James Webb Space Telescope, still at least six years from launch.

Or it could be a gift that becomes a burden. NASA isn’t sure it can afford to put even one of the two new telescopes into orbit.

The telescopes were built by private contractors for the National Reconnaissance Office, one of 16 U.S. intelligence agencies. The telescopes have 2.4-meter (7.9-foot) mirrors, just like the Hubble, but they have 100 times the field of view. Their structure is shorter and squatter. . . . Read Complete Report

U.S. Spy Satellite Agency Gives NASA 2 Space Telescopes

from Yahoo News

By Tariq Malik | SPACE.com – Mon, Jun 4, 2012

The United States’ spy satellite agency is giving NASA two spare space telescopes free of charge, each potentially more powerful than the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA officials announced today (June 4).

The two spy satellite telescopes were originally built to fly space-based surveillance missions for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), but will be repurposed by NASA for astronomical research instead. Their donation to NASA was revealed in a surprise announcement. . . . Read Complete Report

Russia’s Mysterious Space Program

from E.T. Updates

You are looking at an actual photograph from the surface of the planet Venus. Though obtained from a NASA web page, this is not a NASA photo. It is a Soviet era photo. Try as you may, you cannot find such a photo made by a NASA spacecraft. Why? Because NASA has never made a successful landing on Venus with a craft capable of taking photos and transmitting them back to Earth. They did make an accidental landing of a probe (Pioneer Venus 1). It was accidental because the Pioneer Venus 1 dropped off 4 probes that were not designed to survive all the way down to the surface—but one did. The others were destroyed by the immense heat and pressure of the atmosphere. So, NASA accidentally dropped something on Venus, but the Russians actually landed there.

Not only did the Russians successfully land on Venus, they did it 10 times! And that, my friends, is a gigantic mystery. . . . Read Complete Report

New images from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft show the moon’s crust is being stretched, forming minute valleys in a few small areas on the lunar surface. Scientists propose this geologic activity occurred less than 50 million years ago, which is considered recent compared to the moon’s age of more than 4.5 billion years.

A team of researchers analyzing high-resolution images obtained by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) show small, narrow trenches typically much longer than they are wide. This indicates the lunar crust is being pulled apart at these locations. These linear valleys, known as graben, form when the moon’s crust stretches, breaks and drops down along two bounding faults. A handful of these graben systems have been found across the lunar surface. . . . Read complete report
