Robots replacing human workers may leave millions out of job

Published on Oct 29, 2014

Lowe’s is breaking ground by testing robots to help customers navigate their often massive stores and assist with purchases. Although no plans yet exist to implement the autonomous bots nationwide, some believe this is a big leap towards deeply integrating robotics into our daily lives, which experts believe will happen by 2025. RT’s Sam Sacks takes a look at what impact this may have on the human workforce.

May 14, 2013 — A Wayne State University researcher understands that the three most important things about real estate also apply to small ground robotic vehicles: location, location, location.

n a paper recently published in the journal IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, Weisong Shi, Ph.D., associate professor of computer science in the College of Engineering, describes his development of a technique called LOBOT that provides accurate, real-time, 3-D positions in both indoor and outdoor environments. The project was supported in part by the Wayne State Career Development Chair award, which gives Shi an opportunity to explore other areas after receiving tenure at WSU. . . . Read Complete Report

Humans and Robots Work Better Together Following Cross-Training; Swapping of Roles Improves Efficiency (+)’BigDog’ robot trained to throw cinder blocks (Video)

From Science Daily

Feb. 11, 2013 — Spending a day in someone else’s shoes can help us to learn what makes them tick. Now the same approach is being used to develop a better understanding between humans and robots, to enable them to work together as a team.

Robots are increasingly being used in the manufacturing industry to perform tasks that bring them into closer contact with humans. But while a great deal of work is being done to ensure robots and humans can operate safely side-by-side, more effort is needed to make robots smart enough to work effectively with people, says Julie Shah, an assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics at MIT and head of the Interactive Robotics Group in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). . . . ‘BigDog’ robot trained to throw cinder blocks

Published on Mar 6, 2013

The Army Research Laboratories Robotics Program has improved the robot known as “Big Dog.” This mechanical dog doesn’t just bite, but now Big Dog is capable of hurling 35 pounds cinder blocks. RT’s Liz Wahl has more.

Good News: Humans Have Trouble Killing Robots (W/Video)

POSTED BY: EVAN ACKERMAN  /  THU, JANUARY 31, 2013

People are always so worried about robots gaining sentience and killing all humans, but what about humans, who already are sentient (mostly), mercilessly killing robots every time we turn them off? We’re setting a bad example, and robots tend to have very long memories reliable hard drives. As it turns out, though, when you put people in the position of seeing robots as having their own intelligence, it becomes very difficult for most of us to flip the switch. Especially if the robot is begging us not to. . . . Read Complete Report

Pentagon jobs go to robots (Video Report)

“Defense spending creates jobs” is an argument that politicians often make to justify the ever-expanding Pentagon budget. A new factory from defense firm Raytheon shows something quite the contrary, though. At one new Raytheon plant, robots are doing most of the work. RT’s Kristine Frazao explains.

Robots That Perceive the World Like Humans

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) — Perceive first, act afterwards. The architecture of most of today’s robots is underpinned by this control strategy. The eSMCs project has set itself the aim of changing the paradigm and generating more dynamic computer models in which action is not a mere consequence of perception but an integral part of the perception process. It is about improving robot behaviour by means of perception models closer to those of humans. Philosophers at the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country are working to improve the systems of perception of robots by applying human models. . . . Read Complete Report
