Cubans heartened by possible reversal of ban on entertainment salons

By Peter Orsi

The Associated Press

PUBLISHED:

HAVANA — Something unusual appears to be happening in Havana.

The Communist government may be backing off an unpopular economic crackdown barely a week after it was announced — a feat of political dexterity islanders say they are not used to seeing from a leadership that has been in power since the 1950s.

The brouhaha centers on a ban announced Nov. 2 on the dozens of private home cinemas and video game salons that have mushroomed in recent months, becoming a popular diversion for entertainment-starved residents. . . . Read Complete Report

From NBC World News By Reuters 11/3/13

Cuba closed dozens of home-based movie theaters on Saturday and reaffirmed its plans to end the private sale of imported goods as communist authorities pressed for “order, discipline and obedience” in the growing small business sector.

A government statement issued through official media said home-based theaters and video games will “stop immediately in any type of self employment,” a local euphemism for small business.

The statement said “the showing of movies, including in 3D salons, and likewise the organization of computer games, has never been authorized.”  . . . Read Complete Report

DENVER (AP) — Most Cubans remain cut off from the Internet but are still using creative ways to access and spread information online, a dissident blogger told journalists from around the Americas Sunday.

Yoani (YO’-ahn-ee) Sanchez gave a largely grim report of the state of the press in Cuba at a meeting of the Inter American Press Association in Denver. She said President Raul Castro’s regime has been aggressive in arresting and beating people who speak out against the government and has failed to document those actions, as his brother Fidel did. However, she said neither is better than the other.

“They play the good and the bad policeman but in the end they are two policemen,” she said to applause. . . . Read Complete Report

HAVANA (Reuters) – For the 22nd consecutive year, Cuba will ask the United Nations to condemn the United States economic embargo against the island, a top Cuban official announced on Monday, accusing Washington of tightening sanctions in place for more than half a century.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who stated before taking office that he wanted to recast long-hostile U.S.-Cuba relations, has been a disappointment to the Cuban government, which expected him to do more to dismantle the embargo. . . . Read Complete Report

Shifting tactics, dissidents help average Cubans

We are watching activites in Cuba because we believe that there will be a change brought on by the people in the not-to-distant furture.  If the US would drop the embargo that has been a yoke around the peoples necks since 1962 a revolt of the people would happen very fast.

But then CUBA is a controller experiment to see just how far a free people could be pushed into a socialist world before they rebel.  My inside Cuba connection say things are slowly heading in that direction now.  We’l keep a close watch as things unfold. . . EDITOR

EXERPTS

“The idea is to do things so that the people can perceive us as their defenders,” Farinas said. “We’re going to relegate the political demands because we need more popular support before we can really push them.”

“What real impact the new strategy will have, if any, is uncertain in a country where the government regularly jails dissidents and brands them as “mercenaries” financed by the U.S. government to undermine the communist system. . . . Read Complete Report

“There is a network of clandestine information, the volume, speed and efficiency of which you cannot imagine. It is not in megabytes or gigabytes but in terrabytes,” Sanchez told a news conference in Geneva.

“One family has an illegal parabolic antenna hidden in a pseudo watertank and can transmit to 200 to 300 families who pay a monthly fee,” said Sanchez, who has pioneered the use of social media to challenge Cuba’s one-party system.” . . . Read Complete Report
