Amazots!

Now Amazon is in the robot business and, potentially, as a global network of autonomous delivery drones. This is really going to spell the end of the mail delivery person.

In an interview with Charlie Rose on Sunday’s episode of “60 Minutes,” Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos revealed the giant online store is developing a drone-based delivery service called Prime Air. According to Bezos, Prime Air would be able to get customers their products only a half-hour after they click the “buy” button. His “optimistic” estimate to “60 Minutes” was that Prime Air will be available to customers within 4 to 5 years.  (Read the rest from Huffington Post)

DARPA_Logo. jpg SOURCE Wikipedia Public DomainThe development of robots capable of operating in a melange of disarray and hazards will allow relief agencies to reduce the danger to disaster victims and first responders alike. This is the goal of DARPA’s multi-year Robotics Challenge, which in December will pit a variety of robots and software against a series of eight real-world tasks that might be encountered in actual disaster situations. . . From Science Daily

Nov. 7, 2013 — A new device capable of pumping human waste into the “engine room” of a self-sustaining robot has been created by a group of researchers from Bristol.

Modeled on the human heart, the artificial device incorporates smart materials called shape memory alloys and could be used to deliver human urine to future generations of EcoBot — a robot that can function completely on its own by collecting waste and converting it into electricity. . . .Read Complete Report

When considering the word “robot,” the first image that comes to mind is often a cold, metal machine, often performing a single or limited set of functions. A robot may possess appendages that resemble human anatomy, like an arm or an eye, but those are purely functional.

Some engineers, however, are trying to perfect robots whose function is to be more like humans. . . . Read Complete Report with cool slide show.

A proposal to pause the development of “killer robot” technology is seeing a surge of interest from robotics researchers as well as the representatives of key nations at the United Nations this month.

At a UN General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security side event Monday, mission delegates from Egypt, France, and Switzerland voiced an interest in regulating “killer robots” — completely autonomous weapon systems — in warfare. They are some of the first international voices backing ideas that the Human Rights Watch and Campaign to Stop Killer Robots have been championing for about a year. . . . Read Complete Report

In 2011, when an MIT senior named John Romanishin proposed a new design for modular robots to his robotics professor, Daniela Rus, she said, “That can’t be done.”

Two years later, Rus showed her colleague Hod Lipson, a robotics researcher at Cornell University, a video of prototype robots, based on Romanishin’s design, in action. “That can’t be done,” Lipson said. . . . Read Complete Report
