This is my wish to all Americans:
Happy Independence Day! Even if it doesn’t mean what it used to mean.
A couple messages on Facebook from friends in Australia reminded me what Independence Day is supposed to mean: Freedom from tyranny. Of course, the NSA and DHS are now pinging on every utterance of “patriot”, “Liberty”, and “tyranny”.
I recently (last night) for the first time watched the motion picture The Road to Perdition with Paul Newman, Tom Hanks, and Daniel Craig. Now before you think I’m jumping off the deep end by tying that movie to the Fourth of July, stick with me.

Back in my day we played “Cowboys and Indians” (sorry my Native American friends, but that’s what we called it) in the school yard! Of course, I must admit, I’m a Texas Boy.

When I was kid, we often played cowboys and Indians or cops and robbers, where we were always shooting at each other with our toy cap guns or pointing fingers. When I was in high school, it was common for a number of students to have a gun rack in their trucks and one or two rifles in the gun rack. No one thought anything about it, nor do I ever recall any reports of stolen guns.

For centuries, Native Americans have been on the receiving end of some of the worst atrocities committed on U.S. soil, driven from their homes and isolated on impoverished reservations. How can the U.S. government begin to repair the damage done to Native American communities, and compensate in some small way for the injuries done to them?
Well, giving back Mount Rushmore would be a start.
That’s among several suggestions made by United Nations special rapporteur James Anaya, who will formally recommend the U.S. restore land previously owned by various tribes — including the Black Hills of South Dakota, home of the famous national monument.
