Robots replacing Humans . . . EDITOR

From Science Daily

Oct. 7, 2013 — Object recognition is one of the most widely studied problems in computer vision. But a robot that manipulates objects in the world needs to do more than just recognize them; it also needs to understand their orientation. Is that mug right-side up or upside-down? And which direction is its handle facing?

To improve robots’ ability to gauge object orientation, Jared Glover, a graduate student in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, is exploiting a statistical construct called the Bingham distribution. . . . Read Complete Report

ENB339 lecture 1: Introduction to robot vision

Published on Sep 3, 2012

QUT ENB339 Lecture 2/1.

In this lecture we discuss the problem of sensing for robots, absolute and relative, and the particular advantages of vision for animals and robots. We then have a brief introduction to using MATLAB and the Machine Vision Toolbox for some simple image processing applications.

Witnesses in Arizona and California have reported seeing a “huge triangle” object moving across a dark sky on August 7, 2012, according to testimony from the Mutual UFONetwork (MUFON) witness reporting database.

In Case 41541, a witness in Surprise, AZ, reported seeing an “extremely large black/dark triangle object with a light at each corner” about 9:30 p.m. (MST) that moved in a southwesterly direction and disappeared over the White Tank Mountains during a 10-minute observation. . . . Hypothetical Origin of the Unidentified “Phoenix Boomerang” Craft

One possible configuration of the huge “boomerang” shaped craft seen by hundreds of people in multiple states over the past decade. (download full sized image)

The TR6 “TELOS” is designed for use as a transatmospheric, low observable reconnaissance platform with global reach and a long loiter time over target. Employing active electromagnetic, electronic and visual camouflage it is able to penetrate all currently known defensive systems from transorbital height. . . . Read Complete Report

NASA will host a news teleconference at 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. EDT), Wednesday, Aug. 29, to announce new discoveries from its Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The discoveries are related to the distant universe, including supermassive black holes and rare galaxies.

The briefing participants are:

– Daniel Stern, astronomer, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
– Peter Eisenhardt, WISE project scientist, JPL
– Jingwen Wu, astronomer, JPL
– Rachel Somerville, astrophysics professor, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J.

A link to the teleconference graphics will be available at the start of the event at www.nasa.gov/wise .

Archaeologists claim objects are earliest ‘matches’

from BBC News

By Nick Crumpton BBC News

Researchers from Israel say that mysterious clay and stone artefacts from Neolithic times could be the earliest known “matches”.

Although the cylindrical objects have been known about for some time, they had previously been interpreted as “cultic” phallic symbols.

The researchers’ new interpretation means these could be the earliest evidence of how fires were ignited.

The research was published in the open access journal Plos One.

The journal reports that the artefacts are almost 8,000 years old. . . . Read Complete Report
